Why Whales Beach.  Gray whale death adds to 'alarmingly high' strandings in 2026

May 11, 2026, 1:30 p.m. PT

Eighteen gray whales have washed ashore dead on Washington state beaches so far this year, an "alarmingly high" number of strandings according to the Cascadia Research Collective.

The latest dead gray whale recently washed ashore in the Surfside neighborhood of Washington's Long Beach Peninsula on Friday, May 8, according to the organization. The organization listed the cause of the dead female whale as “malnutrition, probable trauma.”

At least 14 of the whales were male, and the majority were malnourished, according to the organization's findings. Whales have been found along the coast, as well as Anacortes, Sequim and Deception Pass. The recent news hasn't all been negative, however. At the end of April, NOAA Fisheries West Coast recorded a gray whale mother and calf swimming along the northern coast of Washington. The video showed both whales looking healthy compared to the emaciated stranded whales washing up in recent weeks."Hopefully they are the first of many more," the agency wrote in a Facebook post.NOAA also observed about 20 feeding gray whales along the Washington section of their northern migration path to the Arctic. Eastern North Pacific gray whales have the longest migrations of any mammals, according to NOAA Fisheries. Their journey spans between 10,000 to 12,000 miles along the Pacific Coast between the Baja Peninsula and their summer feeding in the northern Arctic.  What is a whale stranding? Whales are considered stranded “when they are found dead, either on the beach or floating in the water, or alive on the beach and unable to return to the water,” according to NOAA Fisheries

Marine mammals strand for a number of reasons, including vessel collisions, starvation and different infections or diseases.

How many gray whales are there?

Recent NOAA estimates put the population number around 13,000 gray whales, the lowest since the 1970s.

How many strandings were recorded in past years? Across the West Coast, 47 gray whales had been stranded as of June 2025. There were 31 were stranded in 2024, along with 44 total in 2023.  The 2025 whale strandings were on track to exceed typical season numbers in Washington state. 2023 data from NOAA Fisheries estimated that 13 gray whales were stranded in Washington that year, which marked the end of a four-year gray whale “Unusual Mortality Event” with 347 strandings in the U.S. alone.  Where do I report a whale stranding? Any marine mammal species strandings can be reported by calling the West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network hotline at 1-866-767-6114. To report entangled marine mammals, call the Engtanglement Reporting Hotline at 1-877-767-9425.
