A startling claim by Questlove, the legendary drummer and co-frontman of The Roots, is picking up traction on social media.
The musician, whose real name is Ahmir Khalib Thompson, hosts a podcast, “The Questlove Show,” on iHeart Radio, and it can be viewed on YouTube.
He had Brianna West on his May 3 show, and it was during their conversation that the 55-year-old discussed the stages of his life. As he ran through the years, he talked about things he survived, and that brought him to current times and a troubling trend that he said he had experienced within his group of friends.
“In the last year alone, and you know, I’ve wondered is there a pandemic happening that I’m not aware of?” he said. “I’ll say for me in the last eight months, I’ve lost 11 friends to stage 4 cancer.”
He then discussed learning that his friend, R&B star D’Angelo, had cancer. The singer died on Oct. 14, 2025.
“Like even the day that I found out D’Angelo had cancer, D’Angelo was the sixth person in a 24-hour period that broke the news to me,” Questlove said. “And even then it was like in humor because five other people had broke the news to me like earlier that day and speaking to him late at night, and it was like … what you got to say? And I was like, ‘Dog, just don’t say stage 4 cancer or whatever.’ And he was like, ‘Wait, who told you?’ And I’m like, ‘What?’”
