Daughter of woman involved in altercation at Tim Hortons speaks out
“My mother was wronged in the worst way,” she saidBy
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Family members of Anita Grayson said they remain angry and are calling for more action even after police released new details about their mother’s death.
Grayson died after a fight last week at the Tim Hortons on Ice Way.
“My mother was wronged in the worst way,” her daughter, Tawnda Grayson, said. “I lost the matriarch of my family.”
Police said they responded about 8 a.m. to a report of an altercation at the restaurant and found Grayson unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead, police said.
Grayson said an anonymous person texted a video from inside the restaurant to another family member. She said she posted it online, and others reposted it, with some calling for arrests and protests.
“I just called out to God, we need to see it. I have to see that — please show me — because I need to at least know how, why,” she said she prayed before receiving the video.
“You should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out unalived,” she added. “That is diabolical.”
In a narrative released with the surveillance video, police said Grayson entered the restaurant to complain about a drive-thru order and “berated” a teenage employee.

Police said a 20-year-old employee intervened and told Grayson to leave. Police said an older employee tried to block Grayson from getting to the teenager, but Grayson “forcefully” shoved the employee backward and struck her in the face.
Police said the worker then moved toward Grayson, swinging her arms in an attempt to strike her. Police said Grayson scratched the employee’s face, knocked off her glasses, and pulled out a chunk of her hair.
About 10 minutes later, Grayson laid down on the floor. FWPD said the shift lead noticed and went to check on her, bringing her a cup of water. An additional employee also checked on Grayson as she lay on the floor. An FWPD officer then arrived and found her unresponsive.
She was pronounced dead after medics transported her from the scene.
Tawnda Grayson said she does not accept the police account and believes her mother should still be alive.
“That’s the elderly lady. That’s not how we treat our senior citizens,” she said. “We be careful with them. We make sure that they’re alright. We don’t jump on them and attack them. And scare them to death.”
The Allen County Coroner’s Office has not ruled on Grayson’s cause and manner of death yet, but says preliminary findings show there were “no significant contributory injuries.”
Tawnda Grayson said her mother had congestive heart failure. She said she had just gotten a new heart doctor and was wearing a heart monitor a week before the altercation.
FWPD said in their release that they understand the public concern but urged people to “allow the review process to proceed based on the full body of evidence, not incomplete video clips or inaccurate narratives.”
Family members contacted the station after the police released the video and narrative, and said they still plan to protest. They also want police to release body camera video from officers who first arrived on the scene.
