Newly confirmed Attorney General Pam Bondi took swift action on Thursday, suing Illinois and Chicago to enforce immigration law.
Bondi’s suit, one of her first actions in her post, contends the state’s and city’s sanctuary city policies are unlawful and seeks to have them deemed “invalid.”
“I will restore integrity to the Justice Department, and I will fight violent crime throughout this country and throughout this world and make America safe again,” Bondi said Wednesday after being sworn in as attorney general.
Justice Department filed the complaint in Chicago federal court. “By refusing to honor civil detainers and warrants expressly authorized by Congress, Defendants have unlawfully eliminated these means for federal immigrations officials to carry out their statutory functions,” the complaint stated.
“Both the Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker and Mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson, sued here in their official capacities, profess a shared interest with the Federal Government in enforcing immigration laws to effectuate the removal of such offenders from the United States,” the 23-page-lawsuit contended. “The challenged provisions of Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County law reflect their intentional effort to obstruct the Federal Government’s enforcement of federal immigration law and to impede consultation and communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials that is necessary for federal officials to carry out federal immigration law and keep Americans safe.”
“The conduct of officials in Chicago and Illinois minimally enforcing-and oftentimes affirmatively thwarting-federal immigration laws over a period of years has resulted in countless criminals being released into Chicago who should have been held for immigration removal from the United States,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit appears to be the first that the Justice Department has filed after vowing to investigate state and local officials for allegedly interfering with President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove warned in a memo during the first days of the Trump administration that officials in so-called sanctuary cities could face legal action if they undermine federal immigration laws.
The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois alleges that multiple state and local laws are “designed to and in fact interfere with and discriminate against the Federal Government’s enforcement of federal immigration law.”

The lawsuit specifically notes President Donald Trump’s recent signing of the Laken Riley Act, which requires the detention of unauthorized immigrants accused of theft and violent crimes.
Adopted in 2017, the Illinois Trust Act prohibits police in Illinois from detaining or arresting a person based on their immigration status or on federal immigration detainer. The Way Forward Act requires law enforcement agencies to submit annual reports to the Illinois Attorney General’s office about their compliance with the act.
Last month, ICE reported that “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with federal partners, including the FBI, ATF, DEA, CBP and the U.S. Marshals Service, began conducting enhanced targeted operations today in Chicago to enforce U.S. immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities.”

Utility says its equipment may have started a small blaze that erupted during January's LA firestorm

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California utility said Thursday that its equipment may have sparked a small wildfire in Los Angeles that broke out the same day as two massive blazes in the area that killed at least 29 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
Southern California Edison said the Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating the cause of the Hurst Fire and believes the utility's equipment caused the blaze, which did not destroy any structures or cause any deaths. In a required filing with state utility regulators, SCE said “absent additional evidence, SCE believes its equipment may be associated with ignition of the Hurst Fire.”
In a second filing, the utility said it is looking into whether an idle transmission line became energized and possibly sparked the deadly Eaton Fire, which also sparked Jan. 7 devastated Altadena. But it still maintains there’s no evidence that its equipment was responsible for starting that blaze. The utility acknowledged last month that fire agencies are investigating whether its equipment may have started the Hurst Fire, which scorched about 1.25 square miles (3.2 square km) around the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The utility said it is cooperating with investigators.
Regarding the Eaton Fire, SCE said it was reviewing a video that purports to show “flashes” of electrical arcing from a tower near where the blaze began. The utility said preliminary investigation found no evidence that arcing occurred, while acknowledging that some damage was found on related equipment.
“SCE does not know when this damage occurred and a comparison between pre- and post-fire photographs is underway,” the filing said.
Multiple lawsuits against SCE citing the video claim the utility’s equipment sparked the Eaton Fire, but the utility maintains that it's still too early to make that determination.
“SCE has not identified typical or obvious indications that would support this association, such as broken conductors, fresh arc marks in the preliminary origin area, or evidence of faults on the energized lines running through that area,” the utility said in a news release announcing its filings.
The Eaton Fire, which killed at least 17 people, was fully contained last week. Full containment was also reached on the Palisades Fire, the largest of the blazes that destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 12 people.

Trump says transgender athletes will not be permitted entry to 2028 Olympic Games

President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports, fulfilling a key campaign promise that also could complicate the nation’s role as host of the next Summer Olympics.
At a signing ceremony in Washington on Wednesday, Trump said his administration will not allow transgender athletes to compete in the Summer Games, which are set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028.
“We’re just not going to let it happen,” Trump said Wednesday, flanked by supporters including Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer who has crisscrossed the nation testifying against policies that allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. “It’s ending right now, and nobody’s going to be able to damn thing about it because when I speak, we speak with authority.”
An administration official told reporters earlier Wednesday that Trump’s order would target visas issued to professional and elite transgender athletes traveling to the U.S. to compete in women’s athletics competitions.
“If you are coming into the country and you are claiming that you are a woman, but you are a male here to compete against women, we’re going to be reviewing that for fraud,” the official said.
Trump on Wednesday repeated the false claim that two female boxers who competed in last year’s Paris Games, Imane Khelif of Algeria, where it is not legal for a person to change their gender, and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, are transgender.
“Who could forget last year’s Paris Olympics, where a male boxer stole the woman’s gold medal after brutalizing his female opponent?” Trump said, referring to an Olympic bout between Khelif and Italy’s Angela Carini that ended in less than a minute and helped ignite a firestorm over Khelif’s gender identity. Wednesday’s order directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to review the nation’s visa policies “to address males falsely asserting they are females when entering the United States to compete in women’s sports,” according to a fact sheet. It charges DHS Secretary Kristi Noem with issuing guidance to prevent “such entry to the extent permitted by law.”
The State Department has similarly stopped issuing U.S. passports with “X” gender markers and suspended processing applications from Americans seeking to update their passports with a new gender marker.
Trump’s executive order charges Secretary of State Marco Rubio with demanding changes within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bar transgender athletes from single-sex sports. As a Florida Republican senator, Rubio had said the concept of gender identity is “unscientific, subjective, and political.”
The IOC issued new guidelines for transgender and intersex athletes in 2021, abandoning a prior framework that required competing athletes to undergo hormone treatments and procedures the new policy called “medically unnecessary.” The 2021 guidelines are not legally binding and are meant to help international sporting bodies determine eligibility criteria. The IOC, headquartered in Switzerland, did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s executive order or his remarks on the Summer Games.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday that Trump expects the Olympic Committee and the NCAA, which governs intercollegiate athletics at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the country, to ban transgender athletes from women’s sports.
“The president, with the signing of his pen, starts a very public pressure campaign on these organizations to do the right thing for women and for girls across the country,” she said.
Testifying before a Senate panel in December, NCAA President Charlie Baker said there are fewer than 10 transgender athletes he is aware of who currently compete in college sports, accounting for .002 percent of NCAA athletes nationwide. Baker said he would be willing to work with Congress to create a “federal standard” for eligibility in college sports.
According to Wednesday’s order, Rubio should also promote “international rules and norms governing sports competition to protect a sex-based female sports category” at the United Nations.
The order also requires the Justice Department (DOJ) to take immediate action, including enforcement actions, against schools and athletic associations that allow transgender girls and women to access sports teams and facilities like locker rooms that match their gender identity. The DOJ should abide by the nationwide vacatur of Title IX rules instituted by the Biden administration, which included protections for gender identity and sexual orientation for the first time.
“We are putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice: If you let men take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding,” Trump said Wednesday.
The order also calls for major athletic associations and governing bodies to convene at the White House to hear, in person, stories from female athletes who have been harmed or physically injured by a transgender athlete. State attorneys general will also be responsible for highlighting those accounts and identifying best practices to guarantee equal opportunities for women in sports.
Trump’s order coincides with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is recognized annually in February to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes. The Women’s Sports Foundation, which co-founded National Girls and Women in Sports Day in 1987, has opposed categorical bans on transgender athletes, saying such policies “limit opportunities and harm the development of both cisgender and transgender girls and women.”
The organization, founded by tennis legend and equal rights advocate Billie Jean King, who has also voiced strong opposition to policies barring trans athletes from sports, did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s order.
In a statement, Kelly Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBTQ advocacy group, said the order is part of a broader administration effort to “distract and divide” the country.
“We all want sports to be fair, students to be safe, and young people to have the opportunity to participate alongside their peers,” Robinson said. “But an attempted blanket ban deprives kids of those things. This order could expose young people to harassment and discrimination, emboldening people to question the gender of kids who don’t fit a narrow view of how they’re supposed to dress or look.”
Arguing against a proposal to ban transgender student-athletes from girls’ and women’s sports in January, House Democrats said such legislation would inevitably fuel speculation about whether female athletes look feminine enough to compete in women’s sports without having their gender questioned.
Since returning to office on Jan. 20, Trump has signed a string of executive orders targeting transgender rights, including one declaring the government recognizes only two sexes, male and female, and broadly preventing federal dollars from being used for what he and his administration call “gender ideology.”
Other orders seek to bar transgender people from serving openly in the military and defund schools that promote “gender ideology,” which the White House has broadly defined as “an ever-shifting concept of self-assessed gender identity.” A Jan. 28 executive order aims to end federal support for gender-affirming care for transgender minors, which the order says includes 19-year-olds.
“Guess what? In just a few days I’ll be standing on the start line of a women’s race at one of the biggest indoor meets in the world and ope guess what? I STILL won’t identify as a woman,” middle-distance runner Nikki Hiltz, who is trans and nonbinary, wrote Wednesday evening on their Instagram story in response to Trump’s executive order.
Hiltz, who represented the U.S. at last year’s Summer Games in Paris, will compete at the Millrose Games in New York on Saturday.
“The announcers will also get my pronouns correct and I’ll have coaches, fellow athletes, friends, family and an entire community cheering me on,” Hiltz wrote. “You can sit at your desk and sign a piece of paper and make trans people’s life far more difficult than necessary but you will NEVER erase us or our joy.”
“I obviously know this EO is meant to target trans women far more than trans men and nonbinary folks,” Hiltz added, “but I hope I can be a small beacon of hope and a form of resistance this weekend in NY at the @millrosegames for all trans people.”

How Trump's pledge to punish South Africa reflects Musk's criticism of his homeland
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump said he will cut all funding to South Africa over what he called a human rights violation, a move that reflects Elon Musk's repeated and false claims over the years that authorities in his country of birth are anti-white and even encouraging the killing of white people.
Trump said on Sunday that “terrible things are happening in South Africa. The leadership is doing some terrible things, horrible things” without providing specifics. He said “they're taking away land, they're confiscating land, and actually they're doing things that are perhaps far worse than that.”
While it wasn't clear exactly what Trump was referring to, he appeared to be referencing a new law in South Africa that gives the government powers in some instances to expropriate land from people.
Musk, a close Trump ally and head of Trump's new Department of Government Efficiency, has highlighted that law in recent social media posts and cast it as a threat to South Africa's white minority.
Many South Africans viewed Trump's sudden pledge to punish America's biggest trade partner in Africa as surprising and at least partly influenced by billionaire Tesla owner Musk, who was born in the South African capital of Pretoria but left for Canada after he completed high school.
What is the law Trump appears to be referring to?
The Expropriation Act was signed into law by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa last month and allows the government to take land in specific instances where it is not being used, or where it would be in the public interest if it is redistributed.
It aims to address some of the wrongs of South Africa's racist apartheid era, when Black people had land taken away from them and were forced to live in areas designated for non-whites.
Ramaphosa responded to Trump's comments Monday by saying the U.S. president was wrong and no land had been confiscated, and said he looked forward to "engaging" with the Trump administration over the issue. The South African government said that the U.S. didn't understand the law.
What has Musk previously said about South Africa?
Musk accused Ramaphosa's government in 2023 of allowing a “genocide” to happen over the killings of some white farmers, which have happened for years.
While the killings have been condemned, experts have said there is no evidence of any genocide and they are part of South Africa's extremely high violent crime rates and mostly related to farm robberies. Crime affects all South Africans, and the country has an average of 70 homicides a day, with the vast majority of the victims Black.
Musk also waded into the issue Monday by replying to a post by Ramaphosa's official account on X with the question: “Why do you have openly racist ownership laws?”
Again, it remains unclear exactly what Musk was referring to, but his comments seemed to allude to South Africa's affirmative action laws in business that are designed to advance opportunities for Blacks and other racial groups who were disadvantaged under apartheid. Musk's Starlink satellite internet service has been denied a license in South Africa because it doesn't meet affirmative action criteria.
What is the reality when it comes to race in South Africa?
More than 30 years after the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule, white people in South Africa generally still have a much higher standard of living than Black people.
That's reflected in poverty statistics, with a 2021 study by the South African Human Rights Commission finding that 64% of Black people were living in poverty against 1% of white people. When it comes to land, white people make up about 7% of the population of 62 million and own around 70% of land, according to the most recent land audit, although that share has decreased since apartheid.
Still, the new land law has drawn criticism even from inside the country, with civic groups that represent the interests of whites and some South African political parties saying they will challenge it in court because it allows land to be taken without compensation in some cases.
While South Africa has deep socioeconomic problems and a damaging legacy from nearly a half-century of apartheid, it is regarded as a stable democracy and is not a country brimming with racial tensions as it is sometimes portrayed to be.
What might Trump do?
Trump said on his Truth Social platform that South Africa was “treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,” again without elaborating, and he would stop all future funding while the U.S. investigated.
That threatens around $400 million a year in aid the U.S. gives to South Africa, most of it for the country's HIV/AIDS program through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, known as PEPFAR. South Africa's U.S. funding through PEPFAR was already threatened by Trump's global aid freeze.
South Africa was also concerned that Trump might remove it from the AGOA trade agreement, which gives South Africa and other African nations tariff-free access to the U.S. market. Trump has already imposed tariffs on goods from China, Canada and Mexico — although on Monday he said he is pausing his tariffs planned for Mexico by one month.

Officials with Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) were seen at the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Washington, DC Tuesday, following reports employees involved in Jan. 6 cases could be terminated amid the Trump admin’s efforts to clean house.
On Tuesday, CNN reported the FBI had turned over more than 5,000 employees’ information to the Justice Department, adding from anonymous “people familiar with the situation” that:

Musk has headed up efforts by President Donald Trump’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. “More than 5,000 employee details were submitted, including employee ID numbers, job titles and their role in the January 6 investigations, sources said, but not their names. There are more than 13,000 agents and 38,000 total FBI employees,” CNN added.
The DOGE officials, tasked with tackling government fraud, waste and abuse, were presumably collecting the employees’ information after Trump signaled a purge of numerous Bureau employees last week, requesting the resignation or termination of top senior officials in several cities, including Miami, Philadelphia, Washington, New Orleans and Las Vegas, in addition to firing the heads of 20 FBI field offices.
News that DOGE had shown up at FBI HQ was celebrated on X after the agency was credited with shuttering the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The shakeup has sent shockwaves throughout the intelligence community, with Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll – who was recently appointed by Trump to head the agency while Kash Patel undergoes the nomination process – in the crosshairs after he initially refused to turn over docs to DOGE.
“We understand that this request encompasses thousands of employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts,” Driscoll said in an email to the DOJ, adding, “I am one of those employees.”
Top New York FBI field agent James E. Dennehy also vowed to defy Trump’s attempts to purge the agency, saying in a statement he and other employees, writing, “Today, we find ourselves in the middle of a battle of our own, as good people are being walked out of the F.B.I. and others are being targeted because they did their jobs in accordance with the law and F.B.I. policy.”
“Time for me to dig in,” he added.
Meanwhile, Trump’s FBI purge has also provoked the likes of disgraced ex-FBI Director James Comey, who urged employees earlier this week to “Fight for the rule of law — to protect your country and to keep your jobs.” The Deep State vermin who weaponized the Justice Department against political opponents are fuming at Trump — which means he’s over the target.

President Donald Trump outlined an extraordinary new plan for the Middle East on Tuesday, with the United States taking control of the war-torn Gaza strip while its Palestinian population is moved to neighboring countries.
It is the latest evolution in his plan for rebuilding a territory devastated by Israeli bombardment.
His words will sow fear in the Palestinian population but Trump insisted it was time for a new way of thinking and promised to build 'the Riviera of the Middle East.'
'The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,' he said at a press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
'We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site ... level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings.'
Trump, a property developer who sees the world in terms of deals, has long talked up Gaza's coastal location and pleasant climate as a perfect holiday vacation.
In his vision, U.S. reconstruction would create thousands of jobs and spare Palestinians the pain and expense of rebuilding once again.
When a reporter asked if that might involve military force, Trump answered: 'If it's necessary.'
And when asked who would live there, he answered: 'I envision world people living there. The world's people.
'I think you'll make that into an international, unbelievable place.'
He claimed his plans were based on humanitarian ideals and backing at the highest levels.
Yet the proposal to move out Gaza's Palestinian two-million population will be seen as a call for 'ethnic cleansing' by opponents.
Netanyahu could not help but beam as the president outlined his latest proposal. And he praised Trump for his radical thinking, such as recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel during his first term.
He said it was worth paying attention to Trump's latest idea for a 'different future' for a patch of land riven by terrorism.
'You see things others refuse to see,' he said. 'You say things others refuse to say.
'And after the jaws drop people scratch their heads and they say, you know, he's right.'
Trump said he planned to visit Gaza, Israel and Saudi Arabia during a future trip to the Middle East but offered no further details.
The press conference made for an extraordinary spectacle even by Trump's own remarkable standards, casting doubt on the 'Two State Solution' as the best way to find peace in region and potentially alienating a slew of allies.
More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched strikes in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack.
Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes.
Trump insisted he had support for the idea.
'I do see a long term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East, and maybe the entire Middle East,' he said.
'And everybody I've spoken to ... this was not a decision made lightly ... Everybody I've spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land.'
The comments will terrify Palestinians who have long feared that Israel was seeking to take their land.
They have lived under an economic blockade and more than a year of military bombardment, leaving the territory resembling a 'demolition site,' as Trump put it.
Netanyahu is visiting to plan for the next stage of talks with Hamas, negotiations which plan for three to five years of reconstruction.
American officials have already made clear that they see that timeline as unviable.
Against that backdrop, Trump upended the Middle East 10 days by floating the idea of moving the territory's population to Egypt and Jordan, in answer to DailyMail.com question.
Both countries have rejected the idea.
But the former property developer, who sees the world in terms of deals, insisted that other nations would step up.
'You look over the decades, it's all death in Gaza,' he said.
'This has been happening for years. It's all death.
'If we can get a beautiful area to resettle people, permanently, in nice homes where they can be happy and not be shot and not be killed and not be knifed to death like what's happening in Gaza.'
Earlier Trump's national security adviser told reporters that Trump viewed the issue as a humanitarian one.
'You have these people that are sitting with literally thousands of unexploded ordinance and piles of rubble,' said Mike Waltz.
'At some point, we have to look realistically, how do you rebuild Gaza? What does that look like? What is the timeline?
'A lot of people were looking at very unrealistic timelines. We’re talking 10 to 15 years.'
It was all smiles between Trump and Netanyahu on Tuesday, but there has been tension in their relationship.
Trump complained during his first term that the Israeli leader let him down just before the US killed a top Iranian general in 2020, dropping out of the operation at the 11th hour.
And he was furious that Netanyahu congratulated President Joe Biden on winning the 2020 election.
But Netanyahu, who has lost support at home and who has been indicted at the International Criminal Court, badly needs Trump now to help shore up his position.

Utility says its equipment may have started a small blaze that erupted during January's LA firestorm

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California utility said Thursday that its equipment may have sparked a small wildfire in Los Angeles that broke out the same day as two massive blazes in the area that killed at least 29 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
Southern California Edison said the Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating the cause of the Hurst Fire and believes the utility's equipment caused the blaze, which did not destroy any structures or cause any deaths. In a required filing with state utility regulators, SCE said “absent additional evidence, SCE believes its equipment may be associated with ignition of the Hurst Fire.”
In a second filing, the utility said it is looking into whether an idle transmission line became energized and possibly sparked the deadly Eaton Fire, which also sparked Jan. 7 devastated Altadena. But it still maintains there’s no evidence that its equipment was responsible for starting that blaze. The utility acknowledged last month that fire agencies are investigating whether its equipment may have started the Hurst Fire, which scorched about 1.25 square miles (3.2 square km) around the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The utility said it is cooperating with investigators.
Regarding the Eaton Fire, SCE said it was reviewing a video that purports to show “flashes” of electrical arcing from a tower near where the blaze began. The utility said preliminary investigation found no evidence that arcing occurred, while acknowledging that some damage was found on related equipment.
“SCE does not know when this damage occurred and a comparison between pre- and post-fire photographs is underway,” the filing said.
Multiple lawsuits against SCE citing the video claim the utility’s equipment sparked the Eaton Fire, but the utility maintains that it's still too early to make that determination.
“SCE has not identified typical or obvious indications that would support this association, such as broken conductors, fresh arc marks in the preliminary origin area, or evidence of faults on the energized lines running through that area,” the utility said in a news release announcing its filings.
The Eaton Fire, which killed at least 17 people, was fully contained last week. Full containment was also reached on the Palisades Fire, the largest of the blazes that destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 12 people.

Trump says transgender athletes will not be permitted entry to 2028 Olympic Games

President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports, fulfilling a key campaign promise that also could complicate the nation’s role as host of the next Summer Olympics.
At a signing ceremony in Washington on Wednesday, Trump said his administration will not allow transgender athletes to compete in the Summer Games, which are set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028.
“We’re just not going to let it happen,” Trump said Wednesday, flanked by supporters including Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer who has crisscrossed the nation testifying against policies that allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. “It’s ending right now, and nobody’s going to be able to damn thing about it because when I speak, we speak with authority.”
An administration official told reporters earlier Wednesday that Trump’s order would target visas issued to professional and elite transgender athletes traveling to the U.S. to compete in women’s athletics competitions.
“If you are coming into the country and you are claiming that you are a woman, but you are a male here to compete against women, we’re going to be reviewing that for fraud,” the official said.
Trump on Wednesday repeated the false claim that two female boxers who competed in last year’s Paris Games, Imane Khelif of Algeria, where it is not legal for a person to change their gender, and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, are transgender.
“Who could forget last year’s Paris Olympics, where a male boxer stole the woman’s gold medal after brutalizing his female opponent?” Trump said, referring to an Olympic bout between Khelif and Italy’s Angela Carini that ended in less than a minute and helped ignite a firestorm over Khelif’s gender identity. Wednesday’s order directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to review the nation’s visa policies “to address males falsely asserting they are females when entering the United States to compete in women’s sports,” according to a fact sheet. It charges DHS Secretary Kristi Noem with issuing guidance to prevent “such entry to the extent permitted by law.”
The State Department has similarly stopped issuing U.S. passports with “X” gender markers and suspended processing applications from Americans seeking to update their passports with a new gender marker.
Trump’s executive order charges Secretary of State Marco Rubio with demanding changes within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bar transgender athletes from single-sex sports. As a Florida Republican senator, Rubio had said the concept of gender identity is “unscientific, subjective, and political.”
The IOC issued new guidelines for transgender and intersex athletes in 2021, abandoning a prior framework that required competing athletes to undergo hormone treatments and procedures the new policy called “medically unnecessary.” The 2021 guidelines are not legally binding and are meant to help international sporting bodies determine eligibility criteria. The IOC, headquartered in Switzerland, did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s executive order or his remarks on the Summer Games.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday that Trump expects the Olympic Committee and the NCAA, which governs intercollegiate athletics at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the country, to ban transgender athletes from women’s sports.
“The president, with the signing of his pen, starts a very public pressure campaign on these organizations to do the right thing for women and for girls across the country,” she said.
Testifying before a Senate panel in December, NCAA President Charlie Baker said there are fewer than 10 transgender athletes he is aware of who currently compete in college sports, accounting for .002 percent of NCAA athletes nationwide. Baker said he would be willing to work with Congress to create a “federal standard” for eligibility in college sports.
According to Wednesday’s order, Rubio should also promote “international rules and norms governing sports competition to protect a sex-based female sports category” at the United Nations.
The order also requires the Justice Department (DOJ) to take immediate action, including enforcement actions, against schools and athletic associations that allow transgender girls and women to access sports teams and facilities like locker rooms that match their gender identity. The DOJ should abide by the nationwide vacatur of Title IX rules instituted by the Biden administration, which included protections for gender identity and sexual orientation for the first time.
“We are putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice: If you let men take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding,” Trump said Wednesday.
The order also calls for major athletic associations and governing bodies to convene at the White House to hear, in person, stories from female athletes who have been harmed or physically injured by a transgender athlete. State attorneys general will also be responsible for highlighting those accounts and identifying best practices to guarantee equal opportunities for women in sports.
Trump’s order coincides with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is recognized annually in February to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes. The Women’s Sports Foundation, which co-founded National Girls and Women in Sports Day in 1987, has opposed categorical bans on transgender athletes, saying such policies “limit opportunities and harm the development of both cisgender and transgender girls and women.”
The organization, founded by tennis legend and equal rights advocate Billie Jean King, who has also voiced strong opposition to policies barring trans athletes from sports, did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s order.
In a statement, Kelly Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBTQ advocacy group, said the order is part of a broader administration effort to “distract and divide” the country.
“We all want sports to be fair, students to be safe, and young people to have the opportunity to participate alongside their peers,” Robinson said. “But an attempted blanket ban deprives kids of those things. This order could expose young people to harassment and discrimination, emboldening people to question the gender of kids who don’t fit a narrow view of how they’re supposed to dress or look.”
Arguing against a proposal to ban transgender student-athletes from girls’ and women’s sports in January, House Democrats said such legislation would inevitably fuel speculation about whether female athletes look feminine enough to compete in women’s sports without having their gender questioned.
Since returning to office on Jan. 20, Trump has signed a string of executive orders targeting transgender rights, including one declaring the government recognizes only two sexes, male and female, and broadly preventing federal dollars from being used for what he and his administration call “gender ideology.”
Other orders seek to bar transgender people from serving openly in the military and defund schools that promote “gender ideology,” which the White House has broadly defined as “an ever-shifting concept of self-assessed gender identity.” A Jan. 28 executive order aims to end federal support for gender-affirming care for transgender minors, which the order says includes 19-year-olds.
“Guess what? In just a few days I’ll be standing on the start line of a women’s race at one of the biggest indoor meets in the world and ope guess what? I STILL won’t identify as a woman,” middle-distance runner Nikki Hiltz, who is trans and nonbinary, wrote Wednesday evening on their Instagram story in response to Trump’s executive order.
Hiltz, who represented the U.S. at last year’s Summer Games in Paris, will compete at the Millrose Games in New York on Saturday.
“The announcers will also get my pronouns correct and I’ll have coaches, fellow athletes, friends, family and an entire community cheering me on,” Hiltz wrote. “You can sit at your desk and sign a piece of paper and make trans people’s life far more difficult than necessary but you will NEVER erase us or our joy.”
“I obviously know this EO is meant to target trans women far more than trans men and nonbinary folks,” Hiltz added, “but I hope I can be a small beacon of hope and a form of resistance this weekend in NY at the @millrosegames for all trans people.”

Many South Africans viewed Trump's sudden pledge to punish America's biggest trade partner in Africa as surprising and at least partly influenced by billionaire Tesla owner Musk, who was born in the South African capital of Pretoria but left for Canada after he completed high school.

When it comes to land, white people make up about 7% of the population of 62 million and own around 70% of land, according to the most recent land audit, although that share has decreased since apartheid.
Still, the new land law has drawn criticism even from inside the country, with civic groups that represent the interests of whites and some South African political parties saying they will challenge it in court because it allows land to be taken without compensation in some cases.
While South Africa has deep socioeconomic problems and a damaging legacy from nearly a half-century of apartheid, it is regarded as a stable democracy and is not a country brimming with racial tensions as it is sometimes portrayed to be.

That's reflected in poverty statistics, with a 2021 study by the South African Human Rights Commission finding that 64% of Black people were living in poverty against 1% of white people. When it comes to land, white people make up about 7% of the population of 62 million and own around 70% of land, according to the most recent land audit, although that share has decreased since apartheid.
Still, the new land law has drawn criticism even from inside the country, with civic groups that represent the interests of whites and some South African political parties saying they will challenge it in court because it allows land to be taken without compensation in some cases.
While South Africa has deep socioeconomic problems and a damaging legacy from nearly a half-century of apartheid, it is regarded as a stable democracy and is not a country brimming with racial tensions as it is sometimes portrayed to be.
What might Trump do?
Trump said on his Truth Social platform that South Africa was “treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,” again without elaborating, and he would stop all future funding while the U.S. investigated.
That threatens around $400 million a year in aid the U.S. gives to South Africa, most of it for the country's HIV/AIDS program through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, known as PEPFAR. South Africa's U.S. funding through PEPFAR was already threatened by Trump's global aid freeze.
South Africa was also concerned that Trump might remove it from the AGOA trade agreement, which gives South Africa and other African nations tariff-free access to the U.S. market. Trump has already imposed tariffs on goods from China, Canada and Mexico — although on Monday he said he is pausing his tariffs planned for Mexico by one month.

Officials with Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) were seen at the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Washington, DC Tuesday, following reports employees involved in Jan. 6 cases could be terminated amid the Trump admin’s efforts to clean house.
On Tuesday, CNN reported the FBI had turned over more than 5,000 employees’ information to the Justice Department, adding from anonymous “people familiar with the situation” that:

The DOGE officials, tasked with tackling government fraud, waste and abuse, were presumably collecting the employees’ information after Trump signaled a purge of numerous Bureau employees last week, requesting the resignation or termination of top senior officials in several cities, including Miami, Philadelphia, Washington, New Orleans and Las Vegas, in addition to firing the heads of 20 FBI field offices.
News that DOGE had shown up at FBI HQ was celebrated on X after the agency was credited with shuttering the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The shakeup has sent shockwaves throughout the intelligence community, with Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll – who was recently appointed by Trump to head the agency while Kash Patel undergoes the nomination process – in the crosshairs after he initially refused to turn over docs to DOGE.
“We understand that this request encompasses thousands of employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts,” Driscoll said in an email to the DOJ, adding, “I am one of those employees.”
Top New York FBI field agent James E. Dennehy also vowed to defy Trump’s attempts to purge the agency, saying in a statement he and other employees, writing, “Today, we find ourselves in the middle of a battle of our own, as good people are being walked out of the F.B.I. and others are being targeted because they did their jobs in accordance with the law and F.B.I. policy.”
“Time for me to dig in,” he added.
