Consider the South African hit song played all across South Africa, “Kill the Boar!” South Africans all know this song perpetrates genocide against white people especially land owners and Christians. Sithabile Ngidi, a market trader in Johannesburg, said she hadn't seen white people being mistreated in South Africa.
“He (Trump) should have actually come from America to South Africa to try and see what was happening for himself and not just take the word of an Elon Musk, who hasn’t lived in this country for the longest of time, who doesn’t even relate to South Africans,” Ngidi said.
But Trump's action against South Africa has given international attention to a sentiment among some white South Africans that they are being discriminated against as a form of payback for apartheid. The leaders of the apartheid government were Afrikaners.
Solidarity, AfriForum and others are strongly opposed to the new land expropriation law, saying it will target land owned by whites who have worked to develop that land for years. They also say an equally contentious language law that's recently been passed seeks to remove or limit their Afrikaans language in schools, while they have often criticized South Africa's affirmative action policies in business that promote the interests of Blacks as racist laws.
“This government is allowing a certain section of the population to be targeted,” said AfriForum's Kriel, who thanked Trump for raising the case of Afrikaners. But Kriel said Afrikaners were committed to South Africa.
The South African government says the laws that have been criticized are aimed at the difficult task of redressing the wrongs of colonialism and then nearly a half-century of apartheid, when Blacks were stripped of their land and almost all their rights.

Top that off with the VA Life Insurance personnel telling veterans that if the Veterans Administration Life Insurance personnel sent the money to the wrong bank account-- that it is the responsibility of the veteran to pay back any and all of the outgoing benefit borrowed by the veteran even though the veteran has no access to see or approve whether the account is accurate or not.
However by providing the VA Life Insurance with a current address that surely would be enough for the veterans to attain their benefit—meaning the displaced money awarded to the disabled veteran for his or her use is confiscated by a random bank account holder and no prosecution or attempt of the money is going to be made on behalf of the veteran? Prove otherwise!
It’s a total setup against the veteran and those who hate American and veterans are well known --case in point Biden’s State of the Union two years running hate speech against over half of Americans especially veterans and other patriots who love their country and YHWH!
The VA Life Insurance personnel tell the veteran that the entire sum of the money which they sent to the wrong bank account is the total fault of the veteran and that the veteran is solely responsible for the mistake of the VA Life Insurance agency and personnel --and the veteran must pay it back in full.
VA Disability Life Insurance and Loan is a benefit to qualified veterans in the US Military and it is causing major problems for veterans here’s why…The VA Disability Life Insurance and Loan for Veterans appears to be a hack job under the late Biden-Harris Administration in affiliation with USAID and other corrupt entities associated with it, all federal agencies until President Trump takes care of it properly and has proper personnel working for veterans.
Veterans apply for their benefit and a help desk personnel helps the veteran apply for the loan. The loan is processed and sent to the information on hand, which may be an old bank account for direct deposit. There is no way for the veteran to know what bank account the VA Life Insurance program has on file for them. Thus it is easy for VA Insurance Loan agency and personnel to steel the money allocated for the veterans and pocket it for their own gain. DEI is a major concern here for the welfare and protection of veterans, meaning that veterans are getting short changed in every way.
The VA Disability Life Insurance and Loan website does not allow the veteran to make sure their proper bank accounts are automatically issued their federal benefits-- is updated or not. There is nowhere on the website that shows the veteran where the loan money is to be sent other than the home address shown on the website on the veterans account. This implies a huge gap for Biden-Harris Administration and USAID,
The kicker here is this: Directly on the webpage where the veterans can see inside the portal there is a crisis line number that pervades the screen like a weird beacon to veterans. Is the crisis line there to help troubled and depressed sick veterans or is it there as a provacateur in the face of veterans who are woefully treated and think there is no way for improvement in their life?

AUSTIN, Texas — A federal bankruptcy judge overseeing the case of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones rejected a proposed settlement from the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.
The decision complicates a proposed sale of Jones' Infowars platform and could spur divisions between families who sued Jones and won nearly $1.3 billion in Connecticut court cases and those who won $50 million in Texas courts. The proposed settlement had aimed to address how the families would split $16 million in liquidated assets.
In the proposed settlement, the families who sued Jones in Texas would have received $4 million and the right to collect 25% of any distributions exceeding $12 million going to the families who sued Jones in Connecticut. The settlement could have allowed some families who sued in Texas to collectively receive up to $480 million from Infowars' parent company, Free Speech Systems.
Jones said the settlement was an effort to dismiss his appeals.
U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Christopher Lopez of the Southern District of Texas stated in a Wednesday hearing that the families and Chapter 7 trustee Christopher Murray could either try to resolve issues in state court or return with another settlement proposal.
The denial is the next step in Jones' ongoing bankruptcy case, which initially resulted in Free Speech System and its assets being auctioned off to help pay the nearly $1.4 billion in damages he owes to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Connecticut. Twenty children and six staff members were killed in the attack.
Chris Mattei, an attorney for the Connecticut families, said in a statement Wednesday that "whatever steps the families take next, their determination to enforce every penny of judgments against Alex Jones will not change."

In the proposed settlement, the families who sued Jones in Texas would have received $4 million and the right to collect 25% of any distributions exceeding $12 million going to the families who sued Jones in Connecticut. The settlement could have allowed some families who sued in Texas to collectively receive up to $480 million from Infowars' parent company, Free Speech Systems.
Jones said the settlement was an effort to dismiss his appeals.
U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Christopher Lopez of the Southern District of Texas stated in a Wednesday hearing that the families and Chapter 7 trustee Christopher Murray could either try to resolve issues in state court or return with another settlement proposal.
The denial is the next step in Jones' ongoing bankruptcy case, which initially resulted in Free Speech System and its assets being auctioned off to help pay the nearly $1.4 billion in damages he owes to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Connecticut. Twenty children and six staff members were killed in the attack.
Chris Mattei, an attorney for the Connecticut families, said in a statement Wednesday that "whatever steps the families take next, their determination to enforce every penny of judgments against Alex Jones will not change."

Lopez gave the order for the auction in September. Murray named a joint bid between satirical news outlet The Onionand the Connecticut families as auction winners in November. First United American Companies, which has business ties with Jones, was designated the backup bidder.
In December, Lopez blocked that joint bid, saying the auction process was unfair, lacked transparency and the joint bid was questionable. Since then, First United American Companies has more than doubled its original $3.5 million offer to purchase Infowars' assets.
Lopez told Murray on Wednesday that he's no longer authorized to sell Infowars' assets and vacated the September order that detailed terms of the auction. Murray and the families had tried to use the order as justification to open claims against Free Speech Systems, which Lopez said could not be done as the order had already served its intended purpose.
Murray is now only authorized to sell Infowars' equity.
"I'm not allowing a sale of the assets anymore, pure sale of the equity," Lopez said. "This case keeps taking twists and turns and trying to come up with really masterful, creative lawyering. But at its core, it's something I can't approve. I'm really trying to do what I think is my duty and my job upon careful analysis of the law. And so, I'm not approving. I cannot."
Lopez also said since Free Speech Systems' bankruptcy case was dismissed last year, disputes with the company cannot take place in his courtroom and should be pursued in state court.
Lopez has said previously that he wants the more than 2½-year-long case to be wrapped up in 2025, but it remains to be seen what will happen to Infowars' equity.

Trump administration agrees to restrict DOGE access to Treasury Department payment systems
Attorneys for the Justice Department have agreed to temporarily restrict staffers associated with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing information in the Treasury Department’s payment system.
The agreement comes after a group of union members and retirees sued the Treasury Department alleging that providing DOGE access to the federal government’s massive payment and collections system — and the personal data housed in it — violated federal privacy laws.
The Trump administration filed a motion Wednesday night seeking to enter a proposed order that detailed the agreed-upon terms.
"The Defendants will not provide access to any payment record or payment system of records maintained by or within the Bureau of the Fiscal Service," the proposed order says.
The order would allow exceptions for two special government employees at the Treasury — Tom Krause and Marko Elez — saying they are permitted access "as needed" to perform their duties, "provided that such access to payment records will be 'read only.'"
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly signed off on the agreement Thursday morning. The agreement will stay in place until she rules on the plaintiffs' request for a preliminary injunction, which will be the subject of a Feb. 24 hearing.
Nandan Joshi, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said, “We’re pleased that the court acted quickly to put in safeguards to protect people’s personal information until the facts are sorted out. Americans who rely on Social Security and similar programs should be able to trust their government to handle their sensitive information with the utmost care. No one should ever face having their personal information used for improper purposes without their consent, which is why we’ve brought this case.”
When reached for comment on the order, a White House official said in a statement that "Those leading this mission with Elon Musk are doing so in full compliance with federal law, appropriate security clearances, and as employees of the relevant agencies, not as outside advisors or entities."
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The suit contends newly minted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent should not have given DOGE access to the secure system. Bessent "decided behind closed doors to allow individuals not involved in the processing of the government’s financial transactions to root around in the Bureau’s records. Giving access to those records is unlawful," their filing said.
"And the longer that the private information of Plaintiffs’ members remains accessible to unauthorized third parties, the greater the irreparable injury is. After all, as long as the sensitive data of Plaintiffs’ members remains accessible to Mr. Musk and other members of DOGE, the more opportunity there is for that data to be disclosed to still more unauthorized third parties, either accidentally or deliberately," they added.
The suit seeks an order barring Treasury from "disclosing information about individuals" to DOGE and directing the agency "to retrieve and safeguard any such information that has already been obtained by DOGE or individuals associated with it."
At a hearing Wednesday before Kollar-Kotelly, a Justice Department lawyer denied that Treasury was sharing Americans' personal information.
“The allegation that that information is being shared with third parties outside of Treasury is incorrect,” attorney Bradley Humphreys said. He said that two DOGE appointees classified as special government employees, the same status held by Musk, have been granted access to the systems but that there is no plan for those two employees or any other DOGE employee working at the Treasury Department to share the information with Musk or anyone outside of Treasury.
The Service Employees International Union, one of the groups that filed the lawsuit, called the judge's order a "very important ruling that restricts DOGE’s access to Americans’ private information — but it’s too early to celebrate."
"We must do everything we can to stop the President from turning over our private information to his handpicked oligarchs, which threatens the security of working people and our democracy," SEIU President April Verrett said in a statement.
DOGE's actions under Musk — a tech billionaire and key ally of President Donald Trump — have prompted fierce criticism from Democrats, who have painted Musk as an unelected bureaucrat who is amassing outsized power and reshaping the federal government without the necessary checks and balances.
"Let’s not mince words here: An unelected, unaccountable billionaire with expansive conflicts of interest, deep ties to China and an indiscreet ax to grind against perceived enemies is hijacking our nation’s most sensitive financial data system and its checkbook," Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said in a floor speech Wednesday.
Musk, who spearheads DOGE, has defended itas "something that is sorely needed," framing his efforts as cutting down on wasteful spending.
"DOGE is the wood chipper for bureaucracy," he said Monday on X.
Musk is working in the Trump administration as a "special government employee," according to a White House official, meaning he is not a full-time federal worker. That categorization also suggests Musk's employment period in the White House is limited to about a third of a year.
On the first day of his second term, Trump renamed the U.S. Digital Service as the Department of Government Efficiency. He had previously announced that Musk would help lead the advisory group.
Musk has targeted the U.S. Agency for International Development for elimination, prompting the administration to grind humanitarian assistance to a near halt. He has also turned his attention toward the other wings of the federal government, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Earlier Wednesday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that DOGE would have a role in his department, as well, saying on X that the entity is "going to plug in to help upgrade our aviation system."

According to Trump’s executive order, the goal of DOGE is to “maximize governmental efficiency and productivity” by “modernizing Federal technology and software.” Elsewhere, Trump has vowed that DOGE will “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.”
To carry out this mission, Trump’s executive order granted “DOGE Teams” embedded within various agencies “full and prompt access to all unclassified agency records, software systems, and IT systems” to the “maximum extent consistent with law.”

Dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the government’s lead agency for international humanitarian aid and development assistance, by putting its staff on leave, shuttering its website and halting its overseas work. “We spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper,” Musk posted on X. “Could [have] gone to some great parties. Did that instead.” Trump later claimed the agency was run by “radical lunatics.”
Taken over the General Services Administration (GSA), which manages federal real estate and technology, in order to terminate leases and reportedly slash as much as 50% of the agency’s budget.
Gained full administrative access — over the objections of career civil servants — to the Treasury Department computer system responsible for virtually all government payments: $5 trillion per year in Social Security checks, tax refunds, government salaries, contractor payments and more. Wave of Antisemitic Attacks in Australia Leads to Foreign Influence Concerns
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – A wave of antisemitic attacks has roiled Australia, with a dozen arrests for vandalizing or setting homes, schools, and synagogues on fire since October and hundreds more charged in just over a year with crimes targeting Jews.
The attacks in areas where Jewish people live have provoked an outpouring of condemnation – and a fraught and complicated debate about who´s to blame. But in a rare moment of unity, Australia´s federal lawmakers on Thursday advanced hate crime laws almost unanimously.
“We want people who are engaged in antisemitic activities to be caught, to be charged and to be put in the clink,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters.
“This is a time of national crisis,” opposition leader Peter Dutton said.
Jewish and Muslim organizations and hate researchers have recorded drastic spikes in hate-fueled incidents on both groups since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza. And although how groups define antisemitism and Islamophobia differs, the numbers the organizations cite all show a rise in incidents.
Antisemitic episodes in the two biggest cities, Sydney and Melbourne – home to 85% of Australia´s Jewish population – have drawn the highest profile because they´re severe, unusual and public.
Since November they’ve included:
– A trailer filled with explosives used in the mining industry and a list of Jewish targets discovered on Sydney’s outskirts
– Firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue, with one person hurt. Defacement of another with Nazi symbols and pro-Palestine graffiti
– A Jewish childcare center set on fire
– Jewish schools in Sydney and Melbourne daubed with white supremacist graffiti
– Three Jewish businesses torched
– The former home of a prominent Jewish leader sprayed with graffiti
– Cars defaced and windows smashed in areas where Jews live
Counter-terrorism officials have arrested 12 people in connection with those crimes. Nearly 200 more have been charged since October 2023 in the state of New South Wales – where Sydney is located – with crimes linked to antisemitism, police say.
Investigators are examining whether criminals for hire were paid by foreign actors to carry out the recent attacks, leaders of the taskforce said in January. They did not specify what foreign interests they believed were responsible.
Days later, officials said the 12 arrested by the taskforce don’t share the antisemitic ideology expressed by their crimes, underscoring suggestions that the acts were orchestrated abroad.
The revelations were strange – but not unprecedented, analysts said.
“It´s not completely new, the connection between ideological groups and criminal groups,” said Matteo Vergani, a researcher of hate and extremism with Deakin University. “What´s new is that it usually happens in relation to larger scale terrorist attacks. So that is surprising.”
Lawmakers in speeches this week said the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas had provoked a outburst of antisemitism at levels Australia had not registered before.
In tense public debates echoing those in the United States and elsewhere, right-leaning lawmakers and some Jewish leaders – among them Peter Wertheim from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry – have accused pro-Palestinian demonstrators, particularly “progressives” and university students, he said, of fueling the crimes.
Demonstrators use opposition to Israel to target Jews and give antisemitism “a new social license,” he said.
Other Jewish leaders were more cautious. The episodes were “alarming and worthy of attention,” said Sarah Schwartz from the Jewish Council of Australia.
“But I think the real danger we see here with linking this spate of antisemitic incidents to the Palestine solidarity movement is that that sort of language breeds division, breeds anti-Palestinian racism, breeds Islamophobia and is also bad for Jews as well,” she said.
Albanese´s center-left government on Thursday approved measures in the House of Representatives that will create new and bolstered hate crime offences protecting a raft of characteristics, including race, religion and gender.
Amendments from the opposition include the imposition of mandatory prison terms for terrorism offenses – which the prime minister had rejected before — and for displaying hate symbols.
The bill passed 117 votes to 13. It’s expected the Senate will pass it into law.
Other initiatives since last January include:
– Imposing sanctions on Terrorgram, an online white supremacist terrorism financing network
– Criminalizing Nazi salutes
– Making doxing – the sharing of personal information online – illegal after a list of Australian Jews was published on the internet in 2024
– Appointing national envoys to address Islamophobia and antisemitism
Some states have passed their own laws; New South Wales also revealed proposed hate crime measures Thursday.
By all measures, anti-Jewish hate has spiked across the U.S., Europe and the United Kingdom since October 2023 – even though many leaders have denounced it – prompting tens of thousands of Jews to leave Europe, according to some figures.
However, Australia´s situation had distinctive factors, analysts said. One was the claim that the primary agitators could be based abroad.
Another was the shock of such hate in a country far from the Middle East where a small community of Jews – fewer than 120,000 people, or about 0.5% of the population – has lived relatively peacefully, said Wertheim.
Australia´s restrictive gun laws might have led the perpetrators to commit vandalism crimes, Vergani said. Semiautomatic rifles were outlawed in Australia after a gun massacre in 1996.
But the episodes have also driven a fraught political climate ahead of a national election due by May 17.
Antisemitic attacks have led national news and prompted daily questions for Albanese – and claims of inaction from his main political opponent, conservative Liberal party leader Dutton. Meanwhile, Dutton´s detractors have lambasted him for politicizing the crimes – a charge he has rejected – and for urging a freeze on visas for Palestinians fleeing the war.
Lawmakers this week focused on the wave of antisemitism since Oct. 7 2023 and ignored “a very long history of antisemitism and racism” against other groups in Australia, including Muslims and Indigenous people, said Schwarz.
Still, the crimes have terrified Australian Jews, she added. Vergani said Jewish people tell him they have not experienced such hatred in Australia before.
“They´ve never in their lives had this continuous feeling that something bigger could happen,” he said.

This version of bird flu, known as D1.1, has only ever previously been detected in wild birds and poultry, indicating that it has now spilled over into cows. The detection, found in dairy cattle in Nevada, was a result of the USDA’s national milk testing program that launched in early December, according to the agency's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
"USDA APHIS continues to work with the Nevada Department of Agriculture by conducting additional on-farm investigation, testing, and gathering additional epidemiological information to better understand this detection and limit further disease spread," the agency said in a statement on its website. There has been a total of 957 confirmed cattle infections in 16 states, with 36 new infections in the last 30 days in California and Nevada, the latest USDA data shows. D1.1 has also been shown to potentially be dangerous to humans. Of the 67 human cases of bird flu detected in the U.S. beginning in April 2024, one of the only patients infected with D1.1 was in Louisiana.
The Louisiana patient died earlier this year, although health officials said the patient was over age 65 and had underlying health conditions.
Additionally, a 13-year-old girl in British Columbia, Canada, was admitted to the intensive care unit with the same strain in November.
The Louisiana patient was exposed to a backyard flock and the British Columbia teenager had an unknown exposure.
Late last year, the USDA issued a federal order that all raw milk samples nationwide be collected and shared with the agency in order to test for bird flu.
The USDA order marked the start of the agency’s National Milk Testing Strategy, a program intended to boost surveillance of the nation’s milk supply and dairy herds and increase understanding of how bird flu is spreading.
The USDA said the D1.1 detection in dairy cows "does not change USDA’s [bird flu] eradication strategy and is a testament to the strength of our National Milk Testing Strategy."
APHIS says it plans to publish a technical brief on the findings on its website and post the sequence data on an open-access data bank in the coming week.

Utility says its equipment may have started a small blaze that erupted during January's LA firestorm

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California utility said Thursday that its equipment may have sparked a small wildfire in Los Angeles that broke out the same day as two massive blazes in the area that killed at least 29 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
Southern California Edison said the Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating the cause of the Hurst Fire and believes the utility's equipment caused the blaze, which did not destroy any structures or cause any deaths. In a required filing with state utility regulators, SCE said “absent additional evidence, SCE believes its equipment may be associated with ignition of the Hurst Fire.”
In a second filing, the utility said it is looking into whether an idle transmission line became energized and possibly sparked the deadly Eaton Fire, which also sparked Jan. 7 devastated Altadena. But it still maintains there’s no evidence that its equipment was responsible for starting that blaze. The utility acknowledged last month that fire agencies are investigating whether its equipment may have started the Hurst Fire, which scorched about 1.25 square miles (3.2 square km) around the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The utility said it is cooperating with investigators.
Regarding the Eaton Fire, SCE said it was reviewing a video that purports to show “flashes” of electrical arcing from a tower near where the blaze began. The utility said preliminary investigation found no evidence that arcing occurred, while acknowledging that some damage was found on related equipment.
“SCE does not know when this damage occurred and a comparison between pre- and post-fire photographs is underway,” the filing said.
Multiple lawsuits against SCE citing the video claim the utility’s equipment sparked the Eaton Fire, but the utility maintains that it's still too early to make that determination.
“SCE has not identified typical or obvious indications that would support this association, such as broken conductors, fresh arc marks in the preliminary origin area, or evidence of faults on the energized lines running through that area,” the utility said in a news release announcing its filings.
The Eaton Fire, which killed at least 17 people, was fully contained last week. Full containment was also reached on the Palisades Fire, the largest of the blazes that destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 12 people.

Additionally, a 13-year-old girl in British Columbia, Canada, was admitted to the intensive care unit with the same strain in November.
The Louisiana patient was exposed to a backyard flock and the British Columbia teenager had an unknown exposure.
Late last year, the USDA issued a federal order that all raw milk samples nationwide be collected and shared with the agency in order to test for bird flu.
The USDA order marked the start of the agency’s National Milk Testing Strategy, a program intended to boost surveillance of the nation’s milk supply and dairy herds and increase understanding of how bird flu is spreading.
The USDA said the D1.1 detection in dairy cows "does not change USDA’s [bird flu] eradication strategy and is a testament to the strength of our National Milk Testing Strategy."
APHIS says it plans to publish a technical brief on the findings on its website and post the sequence data on an open-access data bank in the coming week.

Utility says its equipment may have started a small blaze that erupted during January's LA firestorm

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California utility said Thursday that its equipment may have sparked a small wildfire in Los Angeles that broke out the same day as two massive blazes in the area that killed at least 29 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
Southern California Edison said the Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating the cause of the Hurst Fire and believes the utility's equipment caused the blaze, which did not destroy any structures or cause any deaths. In a required filing with state utility regulators, SCE said “absent additional evidence, SCE believes its equipment may be associated with ignition of the Hurst Fire.”
In a second filing, the utility said it is looking into whether an idle transmission line became energized and possibly sparked the deadly Eaton Fire, which also sparked Jan. 7 devastated Altadena. But it still maintains there’s no evidence that its equipment was responsible for starting that blaze. The utility acknowledged last month that fire agencies are investigating whether its equipment may have started the Hurst Fire, which scorched about 1.25 square miles (3.2 square km) around the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The utility said it is cooperating with investigators.
Regarding the Eaton Fire, SCE said it was reviewing a video that purports to show “flashes” of electrical arcing from a tower near where the blaze began. The utility said preliminary investigation found no evidence that arcing occurred, while acknowledging that some damage was found on related equipment.
“SCE does not know when this damage occurred and a comparison between pre- and post-fire photographs is underway,” the filing said.
Multiple lawsuits against SCE citing the video claim the utility’s equipment sparked the Eaton Fire, but the utility maintains that it's still too early to make that determination.
“SCE has not identified typical or obvious indications that would support this association, such as broken conductors, fresh arc marks in the preliminary origin area, or evidence of faults on the energized lines running through that area,” the utility said in a news release announcing its filings.
The Eaton Fire, which killed at least 17 people, was fully contained last week. Full containment was also reached on the Palisades Fire, the largest of the blazes that destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 12 people.
