Kilimanjaro National Park is a Tanzanian National Park located 300 kilometers (190 mi) south of the equator in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania located near the Moshi city. The park includes the all of Mount Kilimanjaro above the tree line and surrounding Montane Forest belt above 1,820 metres (5,970 ft) covering 1,688 square kilometres (652 sq mi), 2°50’–3°10’S latitude, 37°10’–37°40’E longitude. The park is administered by Tanzania National Park Authority.

Kilimanjaro is a giant stratovolcano with elevation 19,335.6 ft. (5,895 m). Also called Kilima Dscharo, Oldoinyo Oibor (White Mountain in Masai), Kilima Njaro meaning is shining mountain in Swahili.

The volcano’s highest and youngest cone is named Kibo. Shira is to the west and Mawenzi in the east are older cones that make Kilimanjaro. Kibo has not been active in modern times, but steam and sulfur do emit from it at times.

Kibo’s summit has a 1 1/2 mile (2 1/4 Km) wide crater, Kilimanjaro is largest of an East West area composed of 20 volcanoes near the south of East African Rift Valley.

Other volcanos in the vicinity are Ngorongoro caldera – a wildlife refuge Ol Donyo Lengi – a carbonitite volcano, and Meru.

Kilimanjaro is a triple volcano with the youngest being a central peak of Kibo sitting at 7.5-8.7 miles (12-14 km) from Shira on west and Mawenza to the east. Kilimanjaro mild lower slopes get steep at 30 degrees about 13,000 ft.(4 km) elevation.

Shira is topped by a broad plateau, perhaps a filled caldera and erosion has etched into a remnant rim there.

Mawenzi’s summit is steep and rocky peak surrounded by cliffs 1,600 ft.(0.5 km) to 4,900 ft.(1.5 km) high. The summit area of Mawenzi. Kibo’s glacier is the highest place in Africa, 1.2 x 1.7 mile (1.9 x 2.7 km) caldera with an inner crater nearly a mile (1.3 km) wide, and inside that a deep, 1,148 ft. (350 m) wide central pit. Original volcanic forms are preserved at the summit like the Cascade stratovolcanoes such as Three Sisters – Basaltic shield is the most important, but least conspicuous element of a chemically complex volcano Kilimanjaro- Africa’s largest volcano is one of largest on Earth.

Animals and plants~ above the timberline, the Kilimanjaro hyrax lives, and grey duiker, rodents, along with bushbuck and red duikers. The Montane Forest has the Cape buffalo and elephants who roam between Namwai and Tarakia rivers and higher elevation areas of Mount Kilimanjaro area. Other monkeys, black and white Colobus are found in the Montane Forest.
